Magic System Appendix: Scene Guide

Practical guidance for writing clear, visceral, and consistent on-page magic scenes.

Purpose

Use this page to keep magic scenes readable, costly, and emotionally grounded.

Core reference: Magic System: The Rule of Flow

Scene Skeleton (Fast Check)

Every active magic beat should make these three items legible:

  1. What is being perceived? (flow signal)
  2. What is being tuned? (current or combination)
  3. What is being paid? (somatic or mnemonic debt)

If one is missing, the scene risks feeling vague or consequence-free.

POV Signals Readers Can Track

Perception Language

  • Pressure shifts (pulse, drag, surge, stall)
  • Fluid textures (thin, clotted, turbulent, poisoned)
  • Body telemetry (heartbeat mismatch, vessel strain, breath hitch)

Resonance Language

  • Intent verbs: align, force, bind, sever, stabilize, distort
  • Channel clarity: clean lock, noisy lock, phase slip
  • Combination shift: single -> dual -> trinity escalation

Cost Language

  • Immediate: nosebleed, tremor, tunnel vision, nausea, collapse
  • Delayed: emotional flattening, memory-distance, attachment dulling
  • Social: someone else absorbs the debt (channeler, captive, system labor)

Escalation Ladder For Chapters

  1. Minor Utility Beat
Small perception trick or controlled manipulation. Cost is noticeable but recoverable.

  2. Conflict Beat
Tactical use under stress. Cost appears during action (pain, bleed, disorientation).

  3. High-Stakes Beat
Dual or trinity use. Cost impacts decision quality and identity stability.

  4. Moral Cliff Beat
Institutional extraction or void-ore temptation. Cost expands from body to ethics and society.

Failure Modes (Use For Tension)

  • Misread Flow: wrong diagnosis, wrong target, collateral harm
  • Bad Lock: unstable resonance creates backfire or partial effect
  • Debt Blindness: caster ignores limits and burns through self
  • Externalized Harm: apparent victory hides exploitation pipeline

Quick Templates

Template: Diagnostic Moment

Perceive anomaly -> name likely source -> show uncertainty -> decide whether to cast.

Template: Combat Cast

Compressed perception -> intent lock -> effect manifestation -> immediate bodily price.

Template: Aftermath

Victory cost audit: what changed in body, memory, and relationships after the cast?

Consistency Rules For Drafting

  • Never present high output as free
  • Never skip the physical sensation of casting
  • Never treat void-ore as reversible experimentation
  • If institutional power appears, show who pays for it
