The Divine Hierarchy: Yazatas and Amesha Spentas
The divine beings of Zoroastrian tradition—the Amesha Spentas, the powerful Yazatas, and the structure of the heavenly hierarchy.
The Structure of Heaven
In ancient Persian cosmology, Ahura Mazda (the Wise Lord) governs creation through a hierarchy of divine beings. These entities are not distant abstractions but active forces that maintain order, truth, and righteousness in the cosmos.
The Amesha Spentas (Holy Immortals)
The seven greatest divine beings after Ahura Mazda himself. Each represents a fundamental aspect of existence and goodness.
- 1. Vohu Manah (بهمن / Bahman)
-
Title: Good Mind, Good Purpose
Persian Name: Bahman
Domain: Good thoughts, wisdom, protection of beneficial animals
Symbol: The Cow, representing peaceful livestock
Nature: The first emanation of Ahura Mazda. Represents the good mind that chooses righteousness over chaos. Welcomes the souls of the righteous after death. Protects those who think and act with wisdom. - 2. Asha Vahishta (اردیبهشت / Ardibehesht)
-
Title: Best Truth, Perfect Order
Persian Names: Ardibehesht, Asha, Arta
Domain: Divine law, truth, cosmic order, fire
Symbol: Sacred Fire
Nature: The principle of truth and righteous order. Asha is the fundamental law that structures reality—the opposite of the Lie (Druj). Through Asha, the cosmos maintains its proper function. Fire is sacred because it embodies Asha's purity. - 3. Khshathra Vairya (شهریور / Shahrivar)
-
Title: Desirable Dominion, Divine Authority
Persian Name: Shahrivar
Domain: Righteous power, metals, sky, protection of the poor
Symbol: Metal, particularly iron and steel
Nature: The divine kingdom and righteous authority. Represents proper use of power and strength in service of Asha. Grants sovereignty to just rulers and empowers those who fight for truth. - 4. Spenta Armaiti (اسپند / Esfand)
-
Title: Holy Devotion, Bounteous Spirit
Persian Names: Esfand, Sepand Armaiti
Domain: Earth, devotion, serenity, protection of women
Symbol: The Earth
Nature: The spirit of devotion, humility, and care. Represents the earth's bounty and human care for creation. Associated with feminine wisdom and the nurturing aspects of existence. Protects the righteous dead in their graves. - 5. Haurvatat (خرداد / Khordad)
-
Title: Wholeness, Perfection
Persian Name: Khordad
Domain: Water, health, perfection
Symbol: Water, rivers, wells
Nature: The principle of wholeness and health. Represents the perfected state of being. Guards waters and grants wellness. Together with Ameretat, promises immortality to the righteous. - 6. Ameretat (امرداد / Amordad)
-
Title: Immortality
Persian Names: Amordad, Amurdat
Domain: Plants, immortality, eternal life
Symbol: Plants, trees, vegetation
Nature: The principle of deathlessness. Represents life eternal and the resurrection. Guards all plant life. Together with Haurvatat, grants the reward of immortality to those who follow Asha. - 7. Ahura Mazda (اهورمزدا / Hormozd)
-
Title: The Wise Lord, God of Wisdom
Persian Name: Hormozd, Ohrmazd
Domain: Wisdom, creation, humanity
Symbol: The Sun, though distinct from it
Nature: The supreme deity, creator of all that is good. Unlike the other six, Ahura Mazda is not an emanation but the source. He is completely wise, good, and the origin of all that exists by choice and consciousness. Often counted as the seventh Amesha Spenta, completing the holy seven.
The Yazatas (Worthy of Worship)
Powerful divine beings who serve Ahura Mazda and the Amesha Spentas. Each has specific responsibilities and powers.
Major Yazatas
- Mithra (مهر / Mehr)
-
Domain: Contracts, oaths, the sun, justice
Nature: One of the most powerful yazatas. Mithra enforces contracts and punishes oath-breakers. He sees all truth, as he rides across the sky. Protects those who keep their word and pursues the dishonest with ten thousand eyes. Associated with warrior virtue and the bonds between people. - Rashnu (رَشْن / Rashn)
-
Domain: Justice, judgment of souls
Nature: The divine judge. At the Chinvat Bridge (Bridge of Judgment), Rashnu weighs the souls of the dead, determining whether they enter paradise or fall to punishment. He judges perfectly, without favoritism, seeing the exact measure of good and evil deeds. - Tishtrya (تیر / Tir)
-
Domain: Rain, storms, the star Sirius, water
Nature: The bringer of rain. Tishtrya battles the demon of drought (Apaosha) annually to bring water to the earth. Appears as a white horse, a young man, or a brilliant star. When strengthened by proper worship and offerings, he defeats drought and brings life-giving rain. - Verethragna (بهرام / Bahram)
-
Domain: Victory, military might, overcoming obstacles
Nature: The spirit of victory and crushing resistance. Manifests in ten forms: wind, bull, horse, camel, boar, youth, raven, ram, buck, and man with golden sword. Grants strength to righteous warriors and ensures victory over evil forces. His name literally means "smashing of resistance." - Sraosha (سروش / Sorush)
-
Domain: Obedience, prayer, divine message, protection
Nature: The personification of sacred obedience and prayer. Sraosha guards the world at night, protecting it from demons. He brings divine messages to humans and guides souls after death. Armed with a great mace, he battles demons who would harm the righteous. - Atar (آذر / Azar)
-
Domain: Fire in all its forms
Nature: The sacred fire itself. Atar is the son of Ahura Mazda and is present in all fires. He fought and defeated the dragon Azi Dahaka in ancient times. Fire is sacred because of Atar's presence within it—it represents truth and purification. - Apam Napat (اَپام نَپات)
